Matt Buttermore has to be smiling.
In his first season as head coach at Hastings College, the volleyball team isn’t just looking like a national tournament contender, but perhaps one that could even be a threat for the national title, too.
The NAIA No. 6 Broncos had no problems sweeping Morningside 25-14, 25-15, 25-12 in Great Plains Athletic Conference action Saturday afternoon at Lynn Farrell Arena. The win improves the team’s conference record to 7-0, and 17-3 overall. Their only loss since Aug. 31 came to the hands of NCAA Division II No. 1 Nebraska-Kearney.
“We had a big match on Wednesday (against No. 21 Midland University) — a really tough environment. Then (Morningside) is a good team, so to be able to play well enough to get a three-set victory is a big confidence booster,” Buttermore said. “They have some good hitters. They have a couple of outsides that can really hit the ball, but we lined up on them well. They’ve got some very dynamic players. They’re a team in this conference that can beat anybody.”
