HC soccer sweeps Doane

Anytime a match features Hastings College and Doane, it’s clear both teams will have a little extra energy — a win has an added importance.

In the women’s soccer match, there were more important things on the line than just school pride. Doane (8-2 overall, 4-0 in GPAC) and the Broncos both entered Wednesday’s contest on top of the conference standings.

After some early fireworks, HC (6-6-1, 5-0-1) was able to hold on for a 2-1 victory.

“It was big. It was great to give us the momentum to finish out the rest of the conference season strong, and hopefully put ourselves as a front-runner for the top seed,” said head coach Mark Hiemenz. “That’s what you want. I think that if you want to get to the conference tournament, you want to be home and be able to sleep in your own bed. We took a big step in that direction today, and hopefully we can close it out.”
