Whippets win state title, Lemek takes second

COLUMBUS — In Tuesday's Class C girls state golf meet, one stroke by any player on three teams could have changed the outcome in what turned out to be a tight team race between Minden, Grand Island Central Catholic and Columbus Scotus.

After weather canceled the first day of competition Monday, the three teams finished the shortened, 18-hole tournament with a top score of 406, forcing a playoff.

Minden head coach Steve Exstrom was told it was the first time three teams had to play for a state championship in a playoff format.

It took 90 minutes to decide the winner of the tiebreaker, but Exstrom said it was worth the wait as Minden edged Columbus Scotus by one stroke in the playoff to win the state title.
