LINCOLN — Junior Matthew Karnes finished in third-place of No. 1 singles to lead the Hastings High boys tennis team to a tie for eighth-place overall as the Class B state tournament came to a close on Friday.
Karnes, the No. 3-seed, defeated fourth-seeded Zahler Zandt of Elkhorn South 6-3, 6-7, 7-2, 6-2 in the consolation match.
Hastings High's No. 2 doubles team of senior Ryan Kern and junior Nicholas Hamburger placed fourth overall after falling 3-6, 6-7, 7-2, 4-6 in the consolation match to top-seeded Elkhorn South duo Drake Schaphorst and Jacob Lortz.
Karnes, who fell to No. 2 Skylar Lowe 6-3, 6-3 to fall one match short of the state title match, finished the year with a 32-12 record.
Kern and Hamburger, who entered the tournament as the No. 6-seed, also had a shot to get into the state title match but fell to Robert Hart and Austin Seagren of No. 2-seed Elkhorn 1-6, 3-6 in the semifinals. The doubles team finished the season with a 28-11 record.
Omaha Skutt Catholic won the team title, edging Lincoln Piux X 44 to 42.5. Hastings High had 18 team points while Adams Central had two team points, good enough for 22nd overall.
