Hastings College's Haley Beardsley celebrates a point during
their match against Dordt Saturday at Lynn Farrell Arena.
The Hastings College volleyball team separated itself in the Great Plains Athletic Conference race a little bit more Saturday with a 25-17, 19-25, 25-17, 25-18 home win over Dordt.
The Defenders (20-8, 9-2 GPAC), who rank second in the conference, are now sitting two games back of the No. 6 Broncos (21-3, 10-0) in the conference race. No. 22 Midland is 2.5 games back, while No. 17 Doane is 3.5 games back.
“(Dordt) beat Midland at Midland, which is a very tough place to play. They’re very athletic,” said first-year head coach Matt Buttermore, who has the Broncos in position to capture their first regular-season conference crown since 2006. “They’re well coached and fast — they can get off the ground. We knew it was going to be a battle. I think they’re coming on strong here toward the end of the year.”
The attack once again was solid for HC, as three Broncos tallied double digit kills — senior Kendra Schwein (23), senior Kirsten Nickel (11) and junior Shayna Schacher (11). Senior setter Haley Beardsley finished with 47 assists, while senior Carissa Kinne had 20 digs.
