Silver Lake, Kenesaw advance to D1-3 finals

Fans in attendance at the Class D-1, Subdistrict 3 tournament Monday night at Hastings High were treated to two different styles of volleyball.

One semifinal match was a classic, grind-it-out match that saw third-seeded Kenesaw win in four sets against No. 2-seeded Red Cloud 25-23, 25-18, 24-26, 25-12. The other was a clean sweep, as top-seeded Silver Lake took care of No. 4 seed Shelton 25-12, 25-15, 25-11 after Shelton swept No. 5-seeded Harvard (2-27) in the opening round.

The Blue Devils (8-21) and Mustangs (22-7) are set to battle for the subdistrict crown today at 7 p.m. at Hastings High.
Against Shelton, Silver Lake used a complete team effort to earn the sweep. Head coach Stacie Heldt told the team prior to the match that it can’t rely on just one or two players.

“It was going to be a team effort. It takes everyone — back row, front row, servers, offense, defense ...,” Heldt said. “It also takes the bench to keep the intensity up and communicating well with their other teammates.”
