night in Minden.

MINDEN — There weren’t any upsets during the opening day of the Class C-2, Subdistrict 9 tournament, leaving fans with the finals matchup they all expected — Blue Hill and St. Cecilia.

The Class C-2 top-ranked St. Cecilia volleyball team had some trouble finishing off Superior, which defeated Franklin 25-9, 25-14, 25-12 to reach the semifinals, but found a way to capture a 25-12, 25-12, 26-24. Blue Hill had to come from behind to win the first set before cruising to a 27-25, 25-13, 25-12 victory — setting up a subdistrict title match today at 7 p.m. between St. Cecilia (27-3) and the Bobcats (22-7) in Minden.

St. Cecilia led its third set 19-16 against Superior, but the Wildcats tied it 19-all on three straight points. Superior was one point away from winning the set, but an illegal lift made it 24-all. The Hawkettes scored two straight points, ending the match with a big kill by Morgan Nikkila.

“We finally passed the ball a little better and got some good swings on the ball. When we got good swings, good things happened,” said St. Cecilia assistant coach Rob Kober. “Our passing for a while broke down, but we got it back together and closed the match.”
