It was in unusually decisive fashion that the 1975 Nelson varsity football won the first-ever Class D state title game ever played, soundly defeating Lawrence, 34-7, in action from Superior High School.

Led by the stellar play of defensive star senior Rick Mazour, Nelson was able to assume control of the game by halftime, a much different scenario than when the two teams battled into the final seconds of the game earlier in the season.

Mazour, a tackle on most plays, assumed the role of linebacker in the "50 rover" alignment utilized by coach Gary DeBoer to stop Lawrence's seldom-seen single wing offense.
