GRAND ISLAND — When a volleyball match goes into a fifth set, especially in postseason play, it can be some of the best entertainment that prep sports can offer.

After dominating the first set against Grand Island Central Catholic, Sandy Creek lost control of the match and allowed the Crusaders to grab the next two. The Cougars were able to rally and take the fourth set.

In a fifth set, though, anything can happen.

Sandy Creek nabbed a 7-5 lead and forced GICC to take a timeout. But just when the Cougars thought they had the momentum, the Crusaders answered back with a 6-0 run. GICC would hold on for a 14-25, 25-13, 25-16, 21-25, 15-10 win over Sandy Creek in the Class C-1, Subdistrict 6 final Tuesday night at Grand Island Senior High to end the Cougars’ season.

“The girls played hard,” said Cougar head coach Angie Morris, whose team finishes the year 20-9. “They gave everything they could. It’s tough to come in and play nine sets. When you play triangulars, you play six in a night. So they played hard, and there’s nothing to be ashamed of.”

Also at the C1-6 Subdistrict, Adams Central fell in a semifinal match to GICC 25-15, 25-18, 25-12 earlier in the night to finish the season 7-20.
