Silver Lake's Mackenzie Skupa spikes the ball against Kenesaw's
Brenna Schneider during their Class D1-3 subdistrict match
Tuesday at Hastings High.
The first time Silver Lake and Kenesaw met on the volleyball court, Silver Lake needed five sets to take down the Blue Devils.
On Tuesday, with their season on the line, it was all Mustangs.
Silver Lake jumped out to a 6-0 lead in the first set and never looked back, going on to post a 25-16, 25-14, 25-16 win over Kenesaw in the finals of the Class D-1, Subdistrict 3 tournament at Hastings High.
“We’ve come a long ways since the first time we’ve played Kenesaw. We beat them, but it was in five sets,” Silver Lake coach Stacie Heldt said. “Our consistency and effort level (was the difference). The first time we just made silly plays. ... And effort level, it was good to see the girls come out determined. They put a lot of time in the gym to get this three-set win.”
With the win, Silver Lake moves one win from reaching the state tournament for the first time since 1999. The Mustangs will play Cross County (11-19) in the Class D-1, District 2 final Thursday at 6 p.m. at Grand Island Central Catholic.
