RED CLOUD — The Red Cloud/Blue Hill wrestling team may have one of its largest groups in recent memory, filling all but two weight classes. And while most of the team is made up of freshmen and sophomores, the group is no stranger to the mat.
“We’re young, but we have years of wrestling experience,” said co-head coach Nick Lonowski.
The Warcats lone senior in the lineup won’t be around at the beginning of the year, as he’s coming off of an ACL injury. Lonowski said he hopes Jerome Zimmerman can make it back to the team by districts. The coach projects him to wrestle in the 170-pound weight class.
In all, there are five freshmen and five sophomores expected to be in the lineup. Kaden Trew (126), Klayton Niles (138), Brooks Armstrong (152), Reece Payne (160), and Josh Smith (182) make up the freshmen class for the Warcats.
Lilly Gomez is a sophomore that will likely wrestle at 106, while Wilcox-Hildreth transfers Aiden Peil and Isaac Peil could trade weight classes throughout the season, switching between 113 and 120. Riley Lambrect is projected to take the 132-pound class, and Brody Fisher rounds out the sophomore class at 285.
Corbin Hoit, a junior, is expected to wrestle at 195 pounds.
Lonowski is going into his fourth year as a head coach, while fellow co-head coach Dennis Riemersma has 50 years of coaching experience under his belt. The two have led two state qualifiers the last two seasons. In its state history, Red Cloud has had four state champions, the last being Matt Lukasiewicz in 1998.
The Warcats open the season Saturday at the Osborne tournament. They’ll host their own tournament on Feb. 1, 2020, at Red Cloud.
