Ram Run front man moves to back of pack

Former Hastings resident Chuck Breunig often shares
Lincoln trails with other runners and bikers when he goes
for his daily run. Breunig is looking forward to competing
for the first time this Saturday in the Ram Run that he
organized for so many years.

Runners who line up Saturday morning for Central Community College-Hastings’ 32nd annual Ram Run and Walk will notice a familiar face in the back of the pack.

Chuck Breunig, 67, who helped establish the event and has served as race director for its entirety, will run it as a participant for the first time.

He retired in April from his position as CCC-Hastings wellness coordinator and moved to Lincoln.

“I was always relieved when it was over because even though it’s a small event, people don’t realize how much planning goes into it, trying to make it right,” he said. “That type of thing. I really look forward to being a participant in the back of the field this year.”

Registration will be 6:45-7:45 a.m. at Hall Cafeteria with the races beginning at 8 a.m.
Breunig, a Wahoo native, came to CCC-Hastings in 1974 as a counselor. After four years away in the late 1980s, he returned to coordinate the college’s wellness program.

When it started, the Ram Run included 7 mile and 5k distances. Even though the race got its start during what Breunig calls “a running boom,” the Ram Run didn’t initially have much participation.

“From the outset, the Ram Run wasn’t very big,” he said.
