Hastings resident Mike Nicolarsen never met an athlete he didn't like.

The level-headed Hastings High School coach and health instructor has been helping Hastings High athletes and students find their groove for more than three decades. A two-sport athlete himself at Hastings High in the late 1960s, the 62-year-old mentor competed in basketball, football, track and American Legion Baseball.

In basketball, his teams made it to the state tournament three straight seasons. As a starter his senior year, he averaged 17 points and 11 rebounds per game, earning All Conference and All State Honorable Mention honors in the process.
