RURAL WEBSTER COUNTY — Trent and Trevor Kohmetscher had just finished loading steers in a semi trailer Wednesday afternoon when they saw a puff of black smoke rising into the sky.
Thinking there had been some kind of farm accident, the twin brothers hopped in their pickup and drove toward the smoke.
“There was a big old puff of black smoke,” Trent said. “I thought maybe there was a combine on fire or something like that.”
They drove four miles south and a mile west.
What they found was horrific.
“It was ugly,” Trent said. “It was bad to see.”
Between 4:30 p.m. and 4:45 p.m. a school bus and tractor-trailer loaded with hay bales collided at 1800 Road and R Road. The intersection is about four miles northeast of Cowles and about 10 miles southeast of Blue Hill.
Webster County Sheriff Troy Schmitz said both drivers and two passengers on the bus were killed. Five students were injured.
