BLUE HILL — As the Blue Hill Bobcats football team went on to beat the Doniphan-Trumbull Cardinals 28-18 here Friday, it was clear that it wasn't just another football game.

A Blue Hill Community Schools bus collided with a semitrailer hauling hay bales about 10 miles southeast of town Wednesday afternoon. Four people — semi driver Travis Witte, 21, of Blue Hill; bus driver Marla Wentworth, 59, of Red Cloud; and two students riding the bus, Dustin Tesdahl, 18, and Caroline Thallman, 10, both of Blue Hill — died at the scene of the accident.

Five other students on the bus ranging in age from 6-10 were transported to area hospitals. One of the injured victims, 7-year-old Taylor Alber, was upgraded from serious to fair condition at Children's Hospital in Omaha on Friday. Another, 8-year-old Allie Thallman, was released from the hospital Friday.

Rather than charge admission for Friday night's game, the school asked for freewill donations at the gate. Proceeds from the game will go to help efforts of emergency responders from Blue Hill and neighboring communities that arrived on scene.
