Drought hot topic on cool day at farm show

HALL COUNTY — While the weather was jacket-cool instead of blazing hot, the powerful winds that blew here Wednesday during Husker Harvest Days were a reminder of the kind of parched summer it's been across Tribland and throughout much of the country.

Vendors' tents were whipped mercilessly by winds that gusted at times to near 50 mph. Dirt filled the air, and the occasional seed corn cap or bacon burger wrapper was seen sailing through the streets, its owner in hot pursuit.

In the end, show organizers decided to shut down Wednesday's edition of Husker Harvest Days around 3 p.m. instead of the usual 5, citing safety concerns related to the winds and rain possibly moving into the area.

Meanwhile, however, many vendors spent the day talking with the throngs of visitors to the event, fielding their concerns about the ongoing drought and the need to conserve inputs — most notably, water — when raising a crop in the field.
