HPS board debates 1-to-1 laptop program
Hastings school board members don't have much time to decide whether to give more than 1,000 students at Hastings High School their own laptop by February.
At the board's work session Thursday, the administration rolled out the proposal to buy about 1,000 laptop computers and implement a one-to-one laptop program. The board must make a decision on the purchase at its meeting Monday in order to meet the Sept. 21 deadline for a discounted rate for the laptops.
The school board has been discussing the idea of a one-to-one program for several years and hosted a pilot program in several advanced math classes during the spring 2012 semester.
“This is a great thing, but cramming it down our throats like this, I don’t like it,” said board member John Bonham. “We need to be fiscally responsible and do what is right for the district and not let the vendor drive the decision here.”
