Morton 5th-graders treated to soil pizza at Prairie Loft

Morton Elementary 5th graders Cale Henderson, 10, left, and
Tyler Emons, 10, add grass "toppings" to their soil pizza at
Prairie Loft Tuesday afternoon. The fifth-graders were
learning how rocks, compost and plant matter combined with
time, pressure and water make soil.
Grass, pine cones and wood chips were just a few of the toppings found on special pizzas at the Prairie Loft Center for Outdoor and Agricultural Learning Monday.

The Morton Elementary fifth-grade class spent three hours at Prairie Loft Monday learning about everything from individual ecosystems to bird beaks and the components of soil.

It was the components of soil that served as the ingredients for the special pizza.

Amy Sandeen, Prairie Loft executive director, taught the students that soil is more than just dirt under their shoes.

“Soil is made of different components that mix together over a long, long period of time,” she told one group of students.
