Rescue workers respond to a scene south of Blue Hill at Roads
1800 and R in Webster County Sept. 5, 2012, where a
school bus and tractor trailer collided. Four fatalities were
reported.
Two Blue Hill men who pulled five children from a burning bus in a horrific bus/semitrailer crash that killed four people Sept. 5 near Blue Hill were heralded as “incredible” heroes by Sen. Mike Johanns, R-Neb., on the Senate floor in Washington, D.C., Wednesday.
Ron Meyer and Phil Petr were recognized in a tribute speech by Johanns as heroic first responders who acted swiftly to save the lives of children trapped in the fiery collision in rural Webster County.
During the speech, Johanns referenced a column about the two men that was written by Amy Palser, managing editor of the Hastings Tribune.
“As one Nebraska newspaper said, ‘By the grace of God, not all the kids riding the bus home from school have been buried. But their fates could have been much different, if not for two guardian angels,’ ” Johanns said. “You see, there were five other students riding the bus that fateful day, who, because of the selfless actions of two brave men, are still with us today.”
