City considers tighter limits on firework stands

The Hastings Fire Department and other city officials are considering tightening the restrictions on firework stands in the city code after a couple of this year's stands left them leery about community safety.

Hastings Fire Prevention Officer Linda Waldron presented the proposed changes to the City Council at a work session Tuesday.

A committee, including officials from Hastings Utilities, the police department and fire department, met beginning in mid-July to review and critique this year's fireworks season.

The group cited one instance this year when a firework tent's stakes got too close to utility lines, and another instance when a tent didn't fit on the site where it planned to go.
