Yields ‘all over the board’ so far

Spotty precipitation during a summer of drought has resulted in harvest yields so far that vary wildly even within a fairly localized area.

Les Montgomery, location manager at the Cooperative Producers Inc. grain elevator in Guide Rock, said the yields for dryland corn producers so far have ranged anywhere from 5 bushels per acre to 140. Dryland soybeans have ranged from zero to 40 bushels per acre.

“It’s completely all over the board depending on where you went from town,” he said. “A lot of the farmers between here and Lawrence — I know of a spot three miles north of town that got 8 inches of rain in June and July, but I can go 10 miles southwest of town over into Kansas and there are spots down there that didn’t get an inch during that time frame. The rains were so spotty, it made a huge difference.”
