Overmiller leads Broncos in season opener

Hastings College quarterback Matt Overmiller passes against
Kansas Wesleyan Saturday at Lloyd Wilson Field.
Hastings College football head coach Tony Harper knew Kansas Wesleyan was going to be a tough test to open the 2013 season.

The Coyotes returned all but two starters on offense and had a defense that started 10 seniors.

But Harper’s Broncos passed the test, defeating Kansas Wesleyan 38-20 on Saturday under the lights at Lloyd Wilson Field.

For three quarters, the Coyotes gave Hastings College all it could handle, and then the Broncos took over in the fourth behind a three-touchdown performance by junior quarterback Matt Overmiller.

“We’re excited with the win. It’s great to start the season 1-0, especially when you play a team that you haven’t played since 1935,” Harper said. “We have a lot of things to work on, but this is a good start to the season. We have to keep it rolling.”
