Zimmerman: Husker freshman playing above standards

Despite all its good, Husker Nation sometimes has a little too much angst in my opinion, especially when it comes to recruiting.

Why can't we get those five-stars? We just got a verbal commitment from a three-star?! Are you kidding?!

Man, tough standards.

True freshman defenders Nathan Gerry and Josh Banderas — for all the praise they received after helping the Huskers to a 56-13 win last Saturday against Southern Mississippi — are helping those red-clad loons cool down with their recruiting concerns.

Banderas started — started! — at middle linebacker last week against the Golden Eagles. Remember the last Husker to do that as a freshman? Barrett Ruud. Not a bad trajectory there.

The middle linebacker spot is the quarterback of the defense. An 18-year-old, folks, is out there in front of 91,000 fans directing your Blackshirts —and he's doing it well, so far.
