Last season, the Fillmore Central volleyball went 26-5 thanks to a core of talented seniors. But the Panthers had a disappointing finish, failing to make the school's first state appearance.
That's a lot to put on the shoulders of the girls on this year's team.
But FC hasn't missed a beat, starting off the season 6-1 with impressive wins over Superior and Class C-1 No. 10 Sandy Creek. The Panthers' only loss has been to C-1 No. 7 Milford in five sets.
"We're pretty pleased with what we've done," head coach Michele Evans said. "We obviously lost a lot of players from last year, but we still have quite a few that have some experience. They have stepped up and are trying to fulfill those roles. I guess it's nice to have this type of competition early in the season to get us to the level that we need to be at. I know last year, we thought our early part of the season was not as competitive as we would've liked."
Now the Panthers enter a stretch of their schedule where earning wins will be even harder. This weekend, the team hosts the Fillmore Central tournament where the Panthers will play C-2 No. 3 St. Cecilia and possibly Milford again or C-1 No. 3 Lincoln Christian.
