Late return propels Blue Hill over St. Cecilia

Blue Hill's Shane Kohmetscher returns a kickoff to score the
winning touchdown in the final minute game against St.
Cecilia Friday at Duncan Field.

Relief, then heartache.

Those were the feelings for the St. Cecilia football team in the final minute of its homecoming game against Blue Hill Friday night.

The Bluehawks tied the game 20-all with 47 seconds remaining on a 1-yard touchdown run by senior running back Joel Grafel, but the extra point was blocked by the Bobcats to keep the score tied.

Seconds later on the impending kickoff, Blue Hill senior Shane Kohmetscher took a bounce at the 13-yard line, made a cut and raced down the Bobcat sideline for an 87-yard return.

St. Cecilia had 33 seconds to try to score, but the Blue Hill defense held on for a shocking 28-20 upset — handing the Bluehawks (2-1) their first regular season loss in 48 games. Their last loss during the regular season was a 6-0 decision on a rainy night in St. Paul back on Sept. 15, 2006.

And for Blue Hill (2-1), the win was another positive for a community recently stricken by tragedy.
