Tigers shut out Whippets

This weekend was rough for a young Hastings High softball team. Not only did it have the No. 1 team in Class B on the ropes until the final inning, but its offense sputtered, scoring six runs in three games — all of which resulted in a loss.

Going into Monday’s game against Minden, there was no doubt that the Tigers needed a lift.

They got one.

Hastings High pitcher Cassandra Chandler gave up her first hit in the final inning, as the Tigers (7-14) shut out Minden 8-0 in six innings on Monday at the Smith Softball Complex. Chandler went all six innings, giving up only one hit, while her offense exploded for eight runs — the same number of runs the Tigers have scored in the past four games.

“I was just hitting spots, keeping it low and making them ground into outs and put it into play easily for my defense to make plays behind me,” Chandler said. “I really have to credit my defense for that one.”
