Broncos falter during homecoming

Doane's Justin Malleck intercepts a pass in front of Hastings
College's Austin Curlee Saturday at Lloyd Wilson Field.

Football teams often have the first offensive series scripted before the game even begins. The Hastings College football team didn't exactly follow the script to start Saturday's game against rival Doane.

The Broncos were flagged twice for a false start before an offensive play was even run. After a three-and-out, punter Owain Hickey fumbled the snap, giving NAIA No. 18 Doane the ball at the HC 15-yard line. Two plays later, Tigers quarterbackand St. Cecilia graduate, Phil Hamburger put Doane on the scoreboard.

The rest of the game was much the same as the Tigers owned every aspect of the game in a 62-7 Broncos loss.

"They dominated us in all phases of the game. We did not perform well. We turned the ball over, we didn't tackle, we put ourselves in this position," said Hastings College head coach Tony Harper.
