Clay Center's Brooke Yates (left) and Jill Baxa celebrate their victory in the 3,200-meter relay and their advancement to the state tournament during the Class D-3 district meet Wednesday in Sutton.
SUTTON — Harvard teammates Selena Longoria and Alyssa McDowell needed less than half of a track meet to put in a full day worth of work on Wednesday.
Before running events could hit full stride at the D-3 district meet in Sutton, Longoria and McDowell had each qualified for state in two events as the Cardinals had five event qualifiers Wednesday all coming in field events.
McDowell won both the high jump and the long jump while Longoria added an individual title in the shot put and a runner-up finish in the discus to qualify for next week’s state meet at Burke Stadium in Omaha for the first time in her career.
“We have been real good about that all year getting a good jump on things at the beginning of the meet,” Harvard coach John Goracke said. “They really got us off to a good strong start and they have done that all year and they have both worked hard to get to where they are.”
Led by McDowell and Longoria Harvard finished fifth in the team standings with 61 points while Clay Center won the district title finishing with 112.33 points and qualifying seven events for state.
Lawrence-Nelson was second with 98.33 points and had six event qualifiers while McCool Junction was third with 92.33 and Giltner finished fourth with 69 points and qualified five events for state.
“I’m proud of our girls,” Clay Center coach Julie Studnicka said. “We got the one’s we thought we were going to get and you never get all of them but we almost got all of them so that is a lot of fun.”
