Clay Center's Broderick Dillon leads in the preliminary heat of the 100-meter dash during the Class D-3 district meet Wednesday in Sutton. |
SUTTON — Reid Norder always likes to put his team and his teammates first but Wednesday the Bruning-Davenport senior had to take care of his own business before he could lend a little help to his friends.
After securing berths to the state meet in a pair of individual events earlier in the day Norder helped the Bruning-Davenport 1,600 meter relay team earn a trip to state with a first place finish at the Class D, District 3 meet in Sutton.
Norder held off Lawrence-Nelson’s Necerian Holston over the final 100 meters to help the Storm qualify for state in the 1,600 relay for the second year in a row.
“I felt like it was all on my shoulders and I wanted to get three of my friends down there,” Norder said. “I was happy I could bring them home.”
The victory by the 1,600 relay team was the highlight of the meet for Bruning-Davenport, which had five event qualifiers for next week’s state meet at Burke Stadium in Omaha.
Bruning-Davenport had three event titles Wednesday as Norder won the 200 meters and finished second behind teammate Seth Williams in the high jump. The Storm finished fifth in the team standings with 66 points.
“It’s a great feeling,” Norder said. “I went last year in two events so to improve that by one is aspecial as a senior.”
McCool Junction won the team title by one point over Lawrence-Nelson finishing with 91 points.
