Praise for firefighters

I am writing to express my gratitude to the some 100 volunteer firefighters who responded from the Glenvil, Lawrence, Fairfield, Blue Hill, Clay Center and Hastings rural fire departments to the recent fire near Pauline.

Along with family, friends, neighbors and local businesses, these volunteer professionals dropped everything to respond to a call for help.

As the headline of the Jan. 17 Hastings Tribune the following day stated: “It was just horrible.”

The high wind, smoke, terrain — and did I mention the wind — made this fire a challenge, to say the least.

These volunteer professionals rose to the challenge and contained the blaze within a couple of hours. If they had not, only God knows how far it would have gone.

These ordinary men and women do extraordinary things for all of us whenever that siren or pager sounds. There is no way that a simple thank you will ever be enough.

Your selfless dedication to taking care of others in need will never be forgotten.
