Memory Lane

Sixty years ago: U.S. Sen. John F. Kennedy, leading Democratic presidential contender, accepted an invitation to address a meeting sponsored by the governmental affairs committee of the Grand Island Chamber of Commerce. Kennedy also agreed to speak in Scottsbluff in mid-October.

Fifty years ago: Blue Hill reported 6 inches of rain and heavy downpours in Hastings flooded part of the city. Southern Hills Country Club was under water as a result of the flooding along 32-Mile Creek. The rain brought the total for the year to date to 30.89 inches.

Forty years ago: Ray Brown, a former police chief at Fairfield, Sutton and Clay Center, was named police chief in Glenvil. Brown was a custodian at the Clay County Courthouse at the time of his hiring.

Thirty years ago: About 400 people jammed into the non-air conditioned Nelson City Auditorium for a meeting of the Nuckolls County Low-Level Radioactive Waste Monitoring Committee.

Twenty years ago: Christopher Scott Decker, 24, of Clay Center pleaded not guilty to first-degree murder in Adams County District Court in connection with the July 10 stabbing death of Kenneth Skidmore, 46, of Hastings.

Ten years ago: Students at Hastings College got their first look at the $12.4 million Morrison-Reeves Science Center building, which replaced the Steinhart Hall of Science built in 1956.

One year ago: Hastings resident Harriett McFeely, who had hosted two previous Bigfoot conferences in Hastings, was planning to open a museum displaying her collection of Bigfoot artifacts and memorabilia on her property at 1205 E. 42nd Street, off U.S. Highway 281.

Highlight in history

On Sept. 3, 1943, Allied forces invaded Italy during World War II, the same day Italian officials signed a secret armistice with the Allies.

Today in Nebraska

In 1855, Army troops attacked a Brule Sioux village along Bluewater Creek in present-day Garden County, killing 86 American Indians and capturing about 70 others in the Battle of Ash Hollow.

In 1872, the Burlington & Missouri railroad linked with the Union Pacific railroad at Kearney Junction near modern-day Kearney.
