Poverty is pervasive in a school district like Hastings Public Schools where a majority of students receive free and reduced lunches, but the district is working to equip students with the skills they need to succeed.

Melissa Pedroza, one of two Hastings Public Schools school-community liaisons, shared her own experiences with childhood poverty and talked about the effects of poverty on children during a presentation for Hastings League of Women Voters members Friday at the YWCA of Adams County.
